How RetailEdge Increased E-commerce Revenue by 40% with Headless Shopify
About the Client
RetailEdge Inc. is a New York-based apparel brand with over 200 SKUs spanning casualwear, athleisure, and seasonal collections. Founded in 2016, the company had grown steadily through its Shopify store and a loyal customer base, but by 2023 it was hitting a ceiling — its aging theme-based storefront could not keep pace with customer expectations for speed, personalization, and mobile-first shopping experiences.
The brand was in a strong position commercially, with a growing wholesale channel, an established influencer partnership program, and a clear vision for international expansion into Canada and the UK. What it lacked was a digital infrastructure capable of supporting that ambition. RetailEdge approached Abstriq after an internal audit revealed that the storefront was costing them conversions every single day — and that the architecture itself was the root cause.

What Was Holding RetailEdge Inc. Back
RetailEdge's existing Shopify store was built on a third-party theme purchased in 2019 and customized incrementally over four years by a series of freelance developers. The result was a site that worked — but barely. Google PageSpeed Insights consistently scored the homepage at 38/100 on mobile. Real-user data from their analytics showed a median page load time of 4.2 seconds on 4G connections, placing them well below the industry threshold for acceptable performance.
The conversion rate of 3.1% was 35% below the industry median for apparel e-commerce, and mobile traffic — which represented 68% of all sessions — was converting at less than half the desktop rate. Bounce rates on product pages exceeded 60% for mobile visitors. Heat map analysis revealed that a significant portion of mobile users abandoned the page before the product imagery had fully loaded.
Beyond performance, the business team faced a compounding problem: the legacy theme was so customized and fragile that any significant change required hiring a developer, taking three to five days of work, and risked breaking other parts of the site. Seasonal campaigns, new collection launches, and A/B tests were bottlenecked by the technical debt embedded in the storefront. RetailEdge's marketing team had essentially lost the ability to iterate — and in e-commerce, inability to iterate is an existential problem.
How Abstriq Solved It
Abstriq proposed a headless commerce architecture with Shopify Plus as the commerce backend and a custom Next.js 14 storefront deployed on Vercel. This approach preserved RetailEdge's existing investment in Shopify — all product data, inventory management, order fulfillment, and payments remained in Shopify — while completely replacing the customer-facing layer with a purpose-built, performance-optimized Next.js application.
The storefront was built with the App Router using React Server Components for product listing and collection pages, eliminating client-side JavaScript payloads that had been crippling mobile performance. Product detail pages were rendered using Incremental Static Regeneration with a 60-second revalidation window, ensuring that inventory changes and price updates propagated within a minute while still serving pre-rendered HTML to shoppers. Algolia replaced Shopify's native search, delivering sub-100ms search results with faceted filtering, typo tolerance, and personalized ranking.
We implemented a custom checkout flow that preserved Shopify Checkout as the transaction layer but wrapped it with a branded pre-checkout experience, reducing the jarring context switch that had been contributing to cart abandonment. Cloudflare Images handled all product photography, automatically serving WebP and AVIF formats at optimal sizes for each device. The entire build pipeline — from code commit to production — runs in under three minutes via Vercel's CI/CD integration, allowing the RetailEdge marketing team to deploy content changes without engineering involvement.
